Islamic Art

If you haven’t heard of Sydney based designer/artist Peter Gould, you are surely missing out.
For a long time I struggled to find Islamic art that suited my taste.  I was looking for something clean and modern but still had the traditional beauty of classical Islamic art.  It’s when my sister Iman bought me this artwork for my girls’ room that I found what I was looking for.

Andalus – Kids

A few months later I had the privilege of purchasing my own piece from Peter Gould himself at a fundraiser for Jenin’s (soon-to-be, I hope!!) school.  He had redesigned the school’s website and was donating half of his proceeds from the night to go towards the school! “And whatsoever you spend of anything (in Allah’s Cause), He will replace it.” (34:39)

Peter Gould’s work can now be found every where you look.  He’s designed for Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens), Zaytuna College, and Seekers Guidance to name a few.

Well, for a few months we (his Facebook fans) have been in great anticipation of an incredible e-book, “Kids of the Ummah” (Muslim Community), that he has been working on.  It features some of the most well known mosques throughout the world as beautiful illustrations accompanied by adorable little children peeking out from different parts of the mosque or gardens.  My girls and I were absolutely thrilled when we downloaded it.  The girls enjoyed the marvelous colors of each page and pointing out all of the children.  I named off each country we visited as we went through each one.

Our favorite:  (Being Palestinian, we may be biased.)

Now you too can own your own copy of the gorgeously illustrated Kids of the Ummah! I’m giving away two copies to two lucky readers! Any child in your life will definitely enjoy going through these beautiful pages.

Wow! This is a huge coincidence that I came upon your page now (from http://www.growmama.com). I've been eyeing Peter Gould's kids' art (and now his 'adult' art) for almost a year now, or more, but have been seriously considering buying them recently. I'm just not able to dish out so much for some of the things. Question for you: What size did you find ideal? are the 12 by 12 sizes enough? If i were to get for my kids room, would i get in a set of three (three different ones) and frame, hang? What about for my living room? for living room i'm looking at the 'Muhammad' one in green and a couple of others, but deciding b/w sizes. The price is just so different- and i have no decorating experience, so not sure what to do.

also, about the e-book, were you guys able to enjoy it even though it's not in print?

  • Julie says:

I've had my eye on his '5 pillars' for a long time. Simple, meaningful, and matches the colors of my daughter's nursery! Really, though, it is impossible to pick a favorite… all of it is beautiful masha'allah.
