I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

I come from a big family. There’s always something to celebrate. A new baby, a marriage, a new house, or just because.  I’ve realized that there is only so much a person can buy from Target before everyone starts giving the same gift.

When I first had Jenin I wanted to buy a nursing cover but could only find those really pricey ones. I eventually found some on ebay that were reasonable.  My mom kept insisting that it was so easy to recreate. Why bother? I figured I’d let someone else make it for me. I was the only one in my family that ever used a nursing cover. I hated the thought of having to get up and leave the conversation.  Some people were weirded out by it, especially when I’d use it in a restaurant.  I never saw the big deal, I am always completely covered.  Anyways, a lot of people would usually ask me where I purchased mine but were never eager to buy one online.  After a frustrating afternoon searching for a gift in Target I decided that I would start to make nursing covers as gifts.

In the back of my mind I kept doubting myself. “Amnah, just because you own a sewing machine, doesn’t mean you know how to sew!” I finally mustered up enough courage to make one. I found a few tutorials I liked and went for it.  I liked this one for it’s detailed step by step process.    It came together very quickly and was really easy to make. I immediately started another one. I made a boy and girl version. No pictures of either one because I was so excited to give them away.  It felt so good to give away something I made with my own hands. Something thought out and not just picked up off of a shelf.

Then I found this tutorial.  I liked the bigger size and how the boning was sewn onto the fabric instead of inserted.  I totally butchered that part of the project though. It was hard to get the presser foot around the boning.  I’ll leave a little bit more fabric next time. I want the least amount of stitches to show.

I picked up this fabric from Joann. A couple of days ago I found some really cute fabric on clearance and additional 50% off.  Can’t pass up a deal like that.

Sew Much Ado is offering a giveaway for the pattern of this adorable doll.  This would make the sweetest birthday present for any little girl. Love those Mary Janes!

    Assalamu alaikom,
That is SO AWESOME! I love receiving homemade gifts but I always feel inadequate if I'm the one making them, that my skills aren't up to par.

I wish I could sew. Sewing and baking, two things I have to take easy and go slow, or else it doesn't work out well for me! Ugh! So, I think it's extra cool that you can sew these gifts!
