Jenin’s birthday – whatever style

Ever since I saw this photo shoot last year I have been wanting to do it for Jenin.  I’m so glad that I got to do it this year.  I think I just might do it for my birthday too.  Hey, Jessica Claire did it so why can’t I?

While it was fun, it wasn’t without a meltdown.
That day I had intended to make rainbow cupcakes but when I got to the store I saw that they had neon gel colors that included purple, orange, and pink.  I thought it would be fun to match the cupcakes to her tights from the photo shoot.
The cupcakes are made from boxed white cake mix which makes it easy enough for anyone to do.  It’s quite a few extra steps and dishes but for a special occasion I think it’s well worth it.  I remember swearing off boxed cake mixes a while back but I have clearly given in.  I’m such a wimp.  At least the frosting was homemade (I didn’t use the lemon juice).

I made two boxes so I had plenty of extra mix for a bundt cake. I left some of the batter uncolored.  Jenin is yet to realize that patience is a virtue.
There is is. In all of it’s poorly lit glory. It wasn’t as bright as I would have hoped. I’ll have to add more tint next time.  The frosting was really good. I’m not sure what Rami thinks frosting is made of because I think I might have traumatized him with the mound of butter and cream cheese in the bowl. He was definitely scared.
Oh, the bundt? You remembered it?  Well… ummm… Know how I said it was my first? Okay will I didn’t realized that bundt cakes aren’t meant to be frosted.  Proceed with caution:
Presenting the world’s ugliest cake.  Yes, I frosted it. Yes, I made it worse by adding colored sugar. Yes, it was the sugar from the king cake that we randomly got during Mardi Gras.  I think I just might have to submit this one to Cake Wrecks.
Back to the cupcakes. They were much cuter.
Don’t be jealous of my amazing food photography skills.
It’s just a stack of books, a box of envelopes, and a sheet of felt on the table by the window. Camera was set on macro. That’s it. Nothing fancy.
So a simple birthday for my baby girl. Balloons and cupcakes.  Do we ever really need more than that?
